Community guide

Sunset Lakes, Kissimmee

A gated, single-story lake community 4.3 miles from Walt Disney World Resort. Here is what staying here is actually like.

Where it is, and why that matters

Sunset Lakes sits in the 34747 corner of Kissimmee, the stretch of Osceola County that runs west toward the Disney property line. In practical terms that means Walt Disney World Resort is 4.3 miles away and about ten minutes in the car, close enough that a mid-afternoon return to the house for a swim and a nap is a genuinely realistic part of the day rather than a nice idea you abandon on day two.

It also puts you within a few minutes of the restaurants and supermarkets along the 192 corridor and around Sunset Walk, which is the difference between a short grocery run and a trek. Orlando International Airport is 26.4 miles east, about half an hour.

The community itself

It is gated, which is the reason a lot of families with young children pick it. The community is built around two lakes with a children's play area, and guests staying at our home have full access to both. The streets are quiet and residential rather than resort-style, so you are not sharing a lobby, a lazy river or a car park with several hundred other holidaymakers.

That is the trade. You give up the big shared water park you would get at a purpose-built resort community, and in exchange you get quiet, security, a private pool nobody queues for, and a lake to walk around in the evening.

Our home here

Rest & Relax at Sunset by the Lake is a four-bedroom, three-bathroom villa that sleeps eight, all on one level, with a private pool and spa that can both be heated on request. Two of the bedrooms are king suites with their own bathrooms, and the other two are themed twin rooms that tend to settle the who-sleeps-where argument before it starts.

Single level matters more than people expect. If you are travelling with grandparents, a pushchair, or a toddler who wakes at six, no stairs is a real feature.

Who it suits

Families doing a park-heavy trip who want the shortest possible drive back, groups who want a gate between them and the road, and anyone for whom stairs are a problem. If your priority is being on a golf course or having a lake you can put a kayak into from the neighborhood, our Davenport home at Polo Park East is the better fit.

Still deciding?

We own homes in both areas, so we have no reason to push you toward either one.
